Week 2 Reading Takeaways

This week, I read the articles “The 3 Insights the New Billie Ad Taught Me About Marketing” and “‘Fearless Girl’ Steals The Conversation”.

The article over the Billie advertisement is super empowering for women and is great call for gender equality. Its new ad enacts as a form of political activism by challenging stereotypical beauty and gender cliches. Female bodies have hair too. Billie also provides it’s target customers with a platform to connect over their shared values. As a small business, Billie markets directly to consumers and relies solely on social media marketing by being authentic and transparent. After watching the Billie ad, I was very surprised that women’s razors cost more than men’s razor. This price differentiation is often refereed to as the “Pink Tax”.

After reading the article ” Girl Steals The Conversation”, I have mixed feelings. I like how they are trying raise awareness and put pressure on the public companies to to add more women to their boards. On the other hand, I think it is a publicity stunt and that it was done at the expense of the original artists of the longstanding 7,000 pound bull. It did not take consideration of the meaning of his original art work and put a negative connotation to his piece. Even the “Charging Bull” sculptor claims that “Fearless Girl” has intentionally distorted the original meaning of his sculpture, turning it into a symbol of corporate misogyny rather than a celebration of American resilience. I commend what the artist of “Fearless Girl” was trying to do with the statue but I do like or appreciate the placement of the statue. I think it was self-serving and did not take into consideration the artist of the bull and his original meaning for his piece.
